Why should I collect rainwater?
« on: August 26, 2014, 11:07:34 AM »
Tell me why I should do this?  I've seen people with water butts to collect it, but seems like a hassle to me.  I know I want to look at some renewable sources to try and reduce my energy bills, but I don't understand how rainwater can help me do this

Can anyone explain how rainwater can be helpful?

Two reasons:

- For your own energy bills. It makes sense that if you're using less water, your water bills are going to cost less.

- For the environment. Using less water saves some water, meaning that it is much more environmentally friendly.

There are things, for example watering plants or feeding animals, that do not require clean water to the extent that it comes out of the tap, and this means that using recycled rainwater could very well be a good solution, so I believe that all should make the effort to collect it if it is at all possible.

In this day and age, where things are becoming less and less stable with regards to resources, it's important that you keep things as economically friendly as possible when it comes to saving water and other energy types. So saving water to use again is incredibly helpful, as it means that you're able to help the planet, even if only in a small way.

Well I'm almost certain that everyone is interested in saving money, and if one thing's for sure it's that you would be able to do that if you saved the rain water, because you wouldn't then need to pay for it - obviously. I can't even tell you how much I save in the summer now, because it's rare that I have to use my hosepipe at all, when in the past it would always have been on.

Mainly to save water and I use it to grow mushrooms better than water from the faucet :)
