General / Re: Is nuclear fission renewable?

No, because the Uranium fuel is a finite resource, therefore it is not renewable. I'm not sure how much the world has in reserves, but it won't run out as soon as coal/oil/gas will anyway.

General / Re: Does China deserve the criticism it gets?

It gets too much criticism. It may build  two coal fired stations per week, but per capita that is the same as the US building two per month. As China is still developing this will eventually stop, and they are already outpacing everyone else in renewables generation.

China produces approximately enough wind energy to power half the UK national grid.

One thing you haven't considered is that this will deplete gas reserves even faster, and prices are high enough now as it is. I recognise that gas is one of the better forms of power generation, but we would end up becoming too dependant on gas then, and as we lack enough reserves ourselves, this would make us more dependant on Russia.

General / Re: Space-based solar power/Microwave plants

Not in our lifetime, and if SimCity is anything to go by they can cause havoc when the microwave signal does not hit the disk perfectly. It would make me seriously concerned. Maybe in a few centuries but the initial investment would be in the trillions.

We used to have them in our school. What I'd really like to know is just how much energy the sensors and related equipment use. I know it can't be that much, but it does make you wonder, especially as it will be active 24/7
