A Guide to getting Heat Pump Quotes in 2023

In these times of rising energy costs we are all looking for new ways to make our homes energy efficient. The renewable energy industry in the UK grows year-on-year with effective solutions for heating and powering our homes and workplaces, saving homeowners on their bills and saving our environment from fossil fuels emissions.

There are many renewable options available, but one of the most attractive options for homeowners is heat pumps. There are two main types. Ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps. They work by transferring the heat found in the ground or the air and using it within your home for space heating and domestic hot water requirements. Wet central heating systems such as radiators and under floor heating can be serviced by heat pumps, you may not need to make any changes, but this will need to be determined by a qualified professional.

If you want to install heat pumps on your existing property, the cost is going to be higher than if you plan to build a new property and install them during the process. They need regular servicing like any mechanical heating system but the cost of this is low and the heat pumps themselves are reliable. They should be regularly checked to maintain efficiency. As a quick guideline, air source heat pumps will cost in the range of £8,000 to £13,000 pounds and ground source heat pumps from £18,000 to £35,000 but this is all covered in our 'How Much Does a Heat Pump Cost' page. Plus the Government currently offer the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which can pay £7,500 of your upfront costs!

For ground source heat pumps the cost will depend on the size of the system and the work needed as the ground around your home will need to be dug up to house the pipes, unless you go for a bore hole system which is generally the more expensive option. Many different systems are available and what is best depends on what you require it for. Whilst the initial costs are high, heat pumps can recoup these costs in a few years. Low running cost and lower energy bills as well as high efficiency mean you will be saving money as soon as it is installed.

Planning permission is not usually required for ground source heat pumps, as the pipes will be installed underground and won’t be seen, the exception being if you live in a listed property or in conservation area. The installation of an air source heat pump on domestic premises will not normally require planning permission provided certain limits and conditions are met. However, it is always wise to check with your local authority on their requirements for both. It is important to compare quotes for heat pumps and include all the relevant information to receive the best quote. You can visit our guide to heat pumps information, and we can then provide you with quotes and find local installers near you.

Understanding Heat Pumps

Before we delve into the process of getting quotes, it's essential to have a basic understanding of heat pumps. Heat pumps are devices that transfer heat from one place to another. They work by extracting heat from a source, such as the air or the ground, and then distributing it to the desired location, either to heat or cool a space.

Heat pumps can also be air to air or air to water, air to air heat pumps heat a property via a fan/air conditioning unit whereas air to water will heat your radiators, water and underfloor heating. Air to air heat pumps don't heat your hot water but can be a good solution to heat a conservatory, office space or large living room. However, they are a more expensive way to heat an entire home both in terms of installation costs and running costs.

Heat pumps can work in colder weather, in fact heat pumps are very popular in Scandinavia. Before you look for quotes it is important to consider the different types available and which your property or business will benefit from. Heat pumps can be installed in many ways and that depends on your property and the space you have.

The primary types of heat pumps include:

  1. Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP): These heat pumps extract heat from the outdoor air and transfer it inside to heat your home during the winter. In the summer, sometimes they can reverse the process to provide cooling.

  2. Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP): Also known as geothermal heat pumps, GSHPs extract heat from the ground or a nearby water source. They are highly efficient but often more expensive to install.

  3. Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps: These systems do not require ductwork and consist of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. They are versatile and can be installed in individual rooms or zones.

Now that you have a basic understanding of heat pumps, let's explore the steps to get quotes for your heat pump installation.

Determine Your Heating and/or Cooling Needs

Before you start collecting quotes, it's crucial to assess your heating and cooling needs. Consider factors such as the size of your home, your climate, and your budget. This information will help you determine the type and size of heat pump that's most suitable for your property. You can consult with a qualified heat pump professional to perform a load calculation or heat/loss survey to accurately size your heat pump.

Research Local Heat Pump Contractors

To find reliable heat pump contractors in your area, start by asking for recommendations from friends, family, and neighbors who have had heat pump installations. Additionally, you can use online resources, such as review websites and social media, to gather a list of potential contractors. Look for contractors who are licensed, insured, and have a good reputation for quality work. The Renewable Energy Hub has a directory of approved, qualified installation companies, just click this link or fill in one of our forms.

Contact Heat Pump Contractors

Once you've compiled a list of potential contractors, reach out to them to inquire about their services and request quotes. Be prepared to provide them with essential information, including:

  • The type of heat pump you're interested in (e.g., air source, ground source, ductless mini-split).
  • The size of your home and the number of rooms you want to heat and cool.
  • Any existing HVAC equipment you have.
  • Your budget and financing options, if necessary.
  • Any specific features or requirements you have for the heat pump system.

Schedule Site Visits

To provide accurate quotes, heat pump contractors will likely need to visit your home to assess your specific needs and the installation site. During these site visits, make sure to:

  • Clearly communicate your expectations and any concerns you may have.
  • Ask questions about the installation process, timelines, and warranties.
  • Request references or examples of past installations.
  • Discuss energy efficiency and potential savings.
  • Confirm the company has the correct acreditations and can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Request Detailed Quotes

After the site visits, the contractors should provide you with detailed quotes. These quotes should include:

  • The total cost of the heat pump installation, including equipment and labor.
  • Any additional costs for ductwork, electrical work, or modifications.
  • Information on the brand and model of the heat pump being installed.
  • Warranty details for both equipment and labor.
  • The estimated timeline for the installation.
  • Any available financing options or rebates.

Compare and Evaluate Quotes

Once you have received quotes from multiple contractors, take the time to compare them thoroughly. Keep in mind that the cheapest option may not always be the best choice. Consider the following factors when evaluating quotes:

  • Price: While cost is important, prioritize value over the lowest price. A higher-quality installation may save you money in the long run through improved efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.

  • Reputation: Research each contractor's reputation by checking online reviews and asking for references. A reliable contractor with a good track record is worth the investment.

  • Warranties: Pay close attention to the warranty terms offered by each contractor. Longer warranties often indicate confidence in the equipment and workmanship.

  • Energy Efficiency: Compare the energy efficiency ratings (SEER and HSPF) of the heat pumps being proposed. A more efficient unit can result in lower energy bills.

  • Timelines: Consider the estimated installation timelines. Ensure that the contractor's schedule aligns with your needs.

  • Additional Services: Evaluate any additional services offered, such as maintenance plans or post-installation support.

Ask Questions

Don't hesitate to ask contractors any questions you may have during the evaluation process. Some important questions to consider include:

  • How will the installation affect my home's aesthetics?
  • What maintenance is required, and how often?
  • How will the heat pump be integrated with my existing HVAC system, if applicable?
  • What happens in case of equipment malfunction or issues after the installation?
  • Are there any available financing options or incentives for energy-efficient upgrades?
  • Can you provide references from past clients?

Verify Licensing and Insurance

Before making a decision, verify that the contractor you choose is properly licensed and insured. Insurance coverage is crucial to protect you and the contractor in case of accidents or damage during the installation. Make sure your proposed installation company has MCS accreditation. This is necessary to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which is a Government initiative that offers £7,500 to home owners who switch to heat pumps from electric boilers, LPG, oil or gas boilers. There are other accreditations that are worth looking out for such as RECC and TrustMark.

Check for Incentives and Rebates

Many local and federal programs offer incentives and rebates for energy-efficient home improvements, including heat pump installations. Check with your local utility company and government agencies to see if you qualify for any financial incentives. These can significantly reduce the overall cost of your heat pump installation. Please see our pages on 'Can I get a Grant for a Heat Pump' and 'Boiler Upgrade Scheme'

Make an Informed Decision

After completing all the above steps, you should have a clear picture of which HVAC contractor offers the best value for your heat pump installation. Take your time to review all the information, and don't rush into a decision. Once you've made your choice, contact the selected contractor to finalize the installation details, sign a contract, and set a start date for the project.
