The Metropolitan Borough of Bolton is based in the North West of England and lies to west of the city of Manchester and covers a relatively large area which includes Blackrod, Farnworth, Horwich, Kearsley and Westhoughton, and a suburban and rural element from the West Pennine Moors. Economically, and similar to many other such areas in the North West of England, Bolton had long thrived on the textile industry for its major source of employment, in particular the production of cotton. During the 50s and 1960s however, the import of cheap cotton from, in particular, the Indian Sub-Continent, began to see a dramatic decline in the textile industry throughout Bolton and the area suffered badly in both economic as well as social terms for many years. Since this time however Bolton’s fortunes have begun to improve, largely thanks to an influx of employment opportunities within the service and retail sectors. During this recent period, and in line with many other similar areas within the United kingdom, Bolton has seen a growing awareness of the need to source and supply alternative forms of energy, in particular renewable energy, to tackle the increasingly rising costs of energy (for both domestic and commercial users) from conventional sources. This push has been strengthened by the recognition that not only must conventional energy process be addressed but the damage that conventional energy sources that burn fossil fuels have on the environment must also form a key part of the thinking when it comes to sourcing energy. At the forefront of this push to establish renewable energy throughout the Bolton area have been the advocates of solar power and solar panel installation. Many new companies have been set up and are now established within the area that are able to install solar panels to meet this growing demand for solar power. This drive to establish solar power as a genuine alternative to conventional energy supply has been firmly endorsed by Bolton Council who are currently offering residents of the Bolton area ‘Green Loans’ at a very low rate of interest if they have solar power installed on their property. Bolton Council is also an ardent support of the National Government’s Green Deal’ scheme which can help substantially consumers to make energy efficiency improvements to their homes, such as solar panel installation, insulation and heating improvements, without paying upfront for the work to be done. Working hand in hand we can see that local and national government, private business and domestic users are coming together to embrace key developments such as solar power and solar panel installation in order to make significant cost savings on energy use across the whole of the Bolton area as well as to help reduce significantly the carbon footprint of the area and contribute toward a reversal of global warming and environmental damage. This is perhaps a trend that looks set to grow over the coming few months and years.
