The city of Bristol is located in the south west of the British Isles and is England's sixth and the United Kingdom's eighth most populous city. The city made its name alongside both Liverpool and Cardiff as a major port emerging during the Seventeenth Century. It was initially given its impetus as a player within the slave trade and later established itself an important hub for the British Empire serving most of the major trade routes around the globe. Like many other British cities during the Twentieth Century Bristol’s fortunes declined rapidly as the Empire itself began to decline and by the late Twentieth Century Bristol had become a relatively impoverished city. However, and again in common with many other cities of its type and stature, the current century has begun to see a significant reversal of fortunes as the city has begun to shift its economic focus away from the old industries and commercial activities. Today the focus of Bristol’s economic future can be said to lie firmly within the emerging sphere of new technology production and development. Also, a notable feature of the city of Bristol today is its impeccable ‘green credentials’, in 2008 for example, Bristol was ranked as Britain's most sustainable city, topping environmental charity Forum for the Future's Sustainable Cities Index (Notable local initiatives include Sustrans, who have created the National Cycle Network, founded as Cyclebag in 1977, and Resourcesaver established in 1988 as a non-profit business by Avon Friends of the Earth. Bristol is the winner of the European Green Capital Award for 2015. It should come as no surprise therefore that at the heart of this massive green initiative the installation of solar panels is play a major part as the citizens, businesses and local government alike look for alternative ways in which to source their energy and power in green, cheaper and more efficient ways. The Bristol-based firm Sunlight Future: Renewable Energy, for example, state that the twin motivations for installing solar panels are uppermost in their corporate manifesto, arguing that ‘We are dedicated to helping you generate clean, sustainable energy and to saving you money at the same time.’ In a similar vein, and as their name suggests, Ecocetera place their corporate emphasis firm on their green credentials arguing ‘Reducing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels and nuclear power is something we feel very strongly about. Solutions such as harnessing the power of the sun make perfect environmental – and financial – sense, for homes, businesses and community buildings alike.’ Many, many other companies are establishing themselves within the Bristol area along such lines and certainly finding a very warm welcome from the citizens and businesses alike with the community, one which is dedicated to producing clean, green city that is becoming more and more wedded to sustainable energy production and supply. At the heart of this project of course lies the installation and reliance upon solar panels.
