The area of Medway is a Unitary Authority that lies in the south east of England and is situated between Greater London to the west and Kent to the south and east. Formally a part of the county of Kent it became a separate authority in 1998. In common with many other areas within the United Kingdom, the area of Medway has begun seriously to explore alternative and in particular renewable sources of energy supply over the last few years. Undoubtedly this drive to explore alternative energy has been driven in no small measure by the sharp rises in the annual bills of conventional energy costs which have climbed dramatically over the last five or six years. It should come as no surprise therefore that the area has seen many new specialist companies that specialise in these new forms of energy production and supply, most notably those focusing on solar power and solar panel installation. These companies have been set up in order to cater for the increasingly growing demand for alternative and cheaper energy sources within the region. We would be wrong to think however that this move towards renewable energy sources and in particular solar power has been driven solely by economic factors. There has been a rising consciousness within the area for some time now of the damage that conventional energy forms that rely on the burning of fossil fuels has on the environment and the manner in which this contributes to the speeding up of processes such as global warming. This is a message that the area is now taking into its schools and its colleges in order to educate the next generation of energy users within the area of the alternatives available when it comes to source both domestic and commercial energy supplies. One such course for example can be found at MidKent College’s Medway campus where trainee plumbers are being taught specifically about the substantial benefits to be gained from solar power and the installation of solar panels. Head of Faculty Stuart Nice, said about the course: “MidKent College has invested in two solar rigs to enable us to deliver the training. In addition, Worcester-Bosch has donated a complete solar package for the students to practise installing.’ Not only will courses like this one and others that are fast becoming established within the area providing the vital education that is necessary to enable future generations within the area to appreciate the substantial benefits of solar power and solar panel installation but also it places those who have attended such courses to be able to leave them well equipped to work in the fast-growing solar energy market. This is undoubtedly a market that looks certain to expand well into the foreseeable future and become a mainstay of energy provision and supply within the area of Medway. Evidence such as this places Medway at the forefront of developments in alternative energy supply and solar power and solar panel installation especially.
