Do you think Hydrogen power plants have a future?

It struck me as a possibility that excess solar/wind might end up being used to produce hydrogen, to be used during dark and calmer periods. Is this a pheasable long term possibility?

There is massive potential, but unfortunately I believe it would be an extortionately expensive investment, so unlikely to come about on a mass scale. I would be very interested to learn more about it though and if there are any economical examples about.

I've heard that hydrogen is difficult to store, so I think the actual storage technology itself will have to develop before it becomes an integral part of the UK power generating infrastructure.
