Energy Saving Technology / LED lights in the home
December 02, 2015, 07:27:40 PM
Only 6W for normal lighing, it would probably cost about £1 per year to run given normal usage. Do you use them in your house? I have 1, with the rest being CFL bulbs.

I don't believe they will. I think it will get to a stage where emmisions are reduce by so much, that a small amount is tolerated. If oil consumption is reduce to just a million barrels per day, then costs may well fall significantly alongside,

I know that some people may be able to provide their own source of fuel, but for those buying the biomass, is it a cheaper system to run than conventional boilers?

I've seen quite a few solar heating systems around, but rarely do I see PV panels on homes. It seems that the difference in prevelance is quite significant. Why is this?

In the same way that many Arab countries export oil as a source of national income, in the future could those same countries (and others) export solar energy as a source of national income?

Scotland could do the same with wind too.

Surely it's sometimes better to have the water not be pumped outside, so how does the system know how to function? I've never understood this, as sometimes sending the water into the pipes would be counterproductive.

General / UK to lose 0.5GW of capacity in the new year
November 29, 2015, 12:16:06 AM
The Wylfa nuclear power station in Angelsey will cease operation in January 2016 and no new site will be generating until 2020 at the earliest.

It may only be 0.5 GW, but the grid was already close to capacity as some point this year. Do you think we will see through 2016 without any blackouts?

In terms of £/Mwh when compared to coal and other forms of electricity generation. I assume pretty low as there is no fuel cost involved, but I'd appreciate if someone could give me a rough estimate.

I've seen a few projects, especially people trying to live off grid. I wondered if anyone here had had a little fun trying to hook up an exercise bike to a generator? It's something I'd like to do, even if it isn't that practical.

General / Does anyone make a profit from feed in?
November 27, 2015, 12:19:14 PM
I know that some people with micro-generation in the home use very little energy. This makes me wonder how many people have an annual electricty bill of £0 and actually make a consistent profit.

I personally don't see it happening. the 22.5GW mosnter is China will probably remain the largest in my opinion. I don't see Egypt/Brazil damming up the Nile or Amzon, and that's probably the only way it could be exceeded.

What do you think?
