What is a green roof

Please explain to me what this is?  Never heard of it before and the vision that comes to mind is a roof made of grass - which I'm guessing is totally wrong.

You're not too far off at all actually. A green roof is exactly that, a roof that's green with Fauna. The benefits are plenty, from increased oxygenation to simple aesthetics. This iss a nexample of a green roof:
