Doncaster is a full 10 years ahead of the national target with its ambitious goal to be carbon neutral by 2040. This equates to a uniform 13-14% year-on-year reduction of emissions and an 85% reduction by 2030 (compared to a baseline of 2005 levels).
The people of Doncaster understand the need to act now and play their part in reducing carbon emissions in order to limit global warming. Doncaster has already experienced major environmental issues with flooding and moor fires and wants to protect communities from the impact of climate change now and in the future. Doncaster’s council has created a strategy derived from the input and expertise of numerous businesses and organisations as well as from residents to address the climate change crisis.
They are in a good position to continue to push forward with environmentally friendly improvements in energy efficiency, and waste and recycling practices in both domestic and commercial settings. Their understanding of the benefits a circular economy brings, has already resulted in the region becoming home to a new generation of recycling and environmental enterprises capable of turning waste from one sector into raw materials for another. Their strategy deals with how they will manage Doncaster-specific issues like litter, fly tipping, and flooding.
It is easy to see the link between clean energy and low carbon sectors and economic growth. New jobs created in the energy and environment sector generate opportunities for higher skilled and higher paid jobs for residents which leads to higher spending and a boost to the local economy.
Doncaster has a range of outstanding investment opportunities for new businesses specialising in clean energy, environmental and waste management services, green technologies, green transport, carbon capture and storage. Those taking up these opportunities will be joining the ranks of forward-thinking businesses such as Saica Natur, Energise Energy Solutions, CPH2, Ivoltz, Refurnish, Synetiq and ESC Global.
Doncaster is already in the top 10 for renewable energy installations in the UK, with 7,053 houses and 191 businesses generating their own electricity.

Carbon reduction goals are driving fundamental changes in the way power is being generated. The phasing out of fossil fuels is creating opportunities for businesses to invest in the plant and equipment needed to generate energy from renewable sources such as onshore wind turbines, solar panels, mine water heat pumps and biomass fuel.
Onshore wind turbines have been particularly successful in the Doncaster area. Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy figures show that Doncaster produced 158 gigawatt-hours of electricity through its seven onshore wind turbines in 2020. This was up from 138 GWh the previous year and from 142 GWh in 2014, when records began. Among seven recorded renewable energy sources, onshore wind ranked first in the area.
With interest in environmental conservation and nature tourism growing there are new openings for the visitor economy. Internationally recognised habitats are attracting visitors to destinations such as Hatfield moor, Denaby Ings and Potteric Carr. There are plans for over 1,000km of cycling and walking routes in the area.
Doncaster Council has a vision for its residents that will see everyone able to enjoy a pleasant and sustainable natural and built environment. Their aim is for homes and other buildings to be energy efficient, for the transport network to have a minimal impact on nature and for residents to have access to attractive green spaces both for leisure and to live and work in. Their aim is also to increase the proportion of land given over to woodland, wood pasture, wildflower grassland and thus support greater biodiversity. This would lead to an enhanced quality of life for everyone.
Doncaster is perfectly placed to help the growth of the renewable energy industry. Existing businesses and those looking to locate in the area can get help and advice from the Business Doncaster team about local and national grants and incentives as well as the availability of industrial units and commercial land.
Unity Yorkshire is Doncaster’s flagship infrastructure project and is one of the largest regeneration schemes in the UK. Work has now begun on the transformational development of the 250-hectare brownfield site which will include the building of 3,100 new homes (by 2035), plus new retail, learning and healthcare facilities, as well as green open spaces and a 500-berth marina.
The project promises to provide green infrastructure, networks, spaces, and places to maintain its ecological assets and habitats. It also has the potential to be one of the most advanced carbon capture and storage facilities in Europe, with associated education and research facilities.
A decarbonising Doncaster grant is being made available to help Doncaster businesses reach Net Zero. This grant scheme could help Doncaster businesses reach their net-zero objectives in line with the UK government targets and the climate emergency declared by Doncaster mayor, Ros Jones.
SME businesses can apply for this grant of up to a maximum of £3,000 to develop decarbonisation initiatives to help their business become “greener” and a more environmentally aware organisation in the long term. Applications will close on 30th September 2022.
Doncaster’s ambitious goal to be carbon neutral by 2040 and the extensive work being undertaken in order to reach this target is in line with the government’s 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution. The Prime Minister promised to create and support up to 250,000 British jobs through investment in green energy, technology and nature. The government committed to investing £1bn to make homes, schools and hospitals greener, and to install 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028. This will be vital if the government is to meet its new carbon emissions target, which constitutes a 68% reduction from 1990 levels, by 2030.
