Given the large range of heat recovery and ventilation system types available, as well as the range of energy needs that different buildings have, it is difficult to give a precise figure for the cost of installing a system. There is also a number of site-specific factors that will impact upon the cost of installing a heat recovery system. These include:

• the complexities of the existing ventilation system
• boiler type
• access to pipework etc.
• the extent of building/renovation work required

Despite the variables involved, it is possible to give a rough idea of how much you can expect to pay. For a domestic MVHR system you can expect to pay around £2,000-£4,000, though this figure may well be slightly higher in the case of retrofit projects given potential installation difficulties. This price will usually include all parts (the heat exchanger, ducting, control panel, etc), installation, as well as the designing of the system to fit your property (though some companies may charge extra for this).

It is possible to install a heat recovery system yourself if you are competent at DIY, though in order to guarantee optimum efficiency it is best to engage a specialist installation company. It is more difficult to calculate the cost of installing a heat recovery and ventilation system in commercial or office buildings as these can vary greatly in scale. Nonetheless, a system fitted in an average-sized office building may cost between £7,000 and £12,000.

The more efficient rotary heat exchanger variety of system will cost slightly more than this. Once again, individual factors will impact upon the installation cost, and retrofitting will almost always be more expensive. A boiler flue economiser for larger heating systems may cost between £6,000 and £8,000.
