Efficiently heating your home this winter

Efficiently heating your home this winter

With winter upon us, the cold has certainly made an impression. The increasing energy costs have made us all a bit fearful to turn the heating on and getting the most out of your money has never been more important.

Insulation

Insulating your home comes in many forms, from large areas such as cavity walls to the smaller details such as pipes, radiators, and tanks.

Insulating your hot water tank can be a cheap and easy way to prevent wasting heat. Pipe insulation usually consists of foam tubes that wrap around your hot water tank’s exposed pipes. This helps reduce the amount of heat lost and keeps your water warmer for longer.

More efficient heating sources

Due to an increased focus on energy efficiency in both residential and commercial buildings, the installation of air-source heat pumps has become more widespread and is predicted to gain further popularity.

An air source heat pump converts heat from the outside air into water and then uses that to heat your building. This type of heat source is more efficient as the amount of electricity it takes to run is outweighed by the amount of heat they produce.

Draught excluding

In general, draughts are the temperature of the outside air and people are sensitive to them. The movement alone, even if the air is the same temperature, can have a cooling effect on your skin.

Draught excluding is one of the cheapest ways you can insulate your home. A good place to start is to identify any unwanted gaps around your home and block them. Ensure you do not block up any intentional ventilation measures, such as around fireplaces and in bathrooms.

By doing this, your house may feel comfortable at a lower temperature. You can then lower the thermostat and save more money on heating.

Flooring underlay

For most buildings, only insulating the ground floor should be an adequate measure to help keep the heat in. It is worth noting, however, that spaces above unheated areas such as garages may also need to be insulated further.

Starting by sealing the gaps between any floorboards and skirting boards can be achieved with some easily bought sealant. Floor underlay is simple to fit as it is a roll of foam-like material that goes between the base and the flooring of your house.

You could also invest in thick, decent-quality carpets and rugs. With these making your feet feel warmer, you may be able to turn the heating down.

Keep doors closed

Keeping doors closed may seem obvious, but it can stop cold air from unheated rooms spreading throughout your home. This also prevents any heat from being wasted, especially if you are only heating specific rooms.

If feeling the pinch is leaving you reluctant to turn up the heating this winter, it’s handy to know that there are ways of increasing your home's heating efficiency. Investing in solutions such as insulation and efficient heat sources combined with strategic habits around the home can keep your home comfortable this season without the scary energy bill.
