Supporting Sustainability Through Digital Education and Workflow Automation

Supporting Sustainability Through Digital Education and Workflow Automation

Sustainable Education

Climate change is becoming a more important problem as time passes. Individuals and businesses need to rethink their operations. As individuals, we should change our personal habits, while businesses should work on implementing the proper policies.

Education is also important for the adoption of sustainable and ecological practices. Kids should be ecologically aware from an early age. In some cases, education can also help adults understand some problems they previously weren’t aware of.

We also have workflow automation, which can help businesses streamline their operations. This can lead to less wastefulness and more efficiency, which in turn can increase the business's sustainability.

Key concepts explained

This article combines multiple concepts that don’t interlap as much on their own. However, their combination can be quite helpful. We’ll explore the key concepts in this article in the sections below.

Sustainability

Sustainability used to be a niche concept. Nowadays, more and more decision-makers are aware of its importance. In many countries, sustainable practices are enforced through laws and regulations.

In other countries that are sustainable, they get benefits like tax reductions. Sustainability includes operations that reduce environmental harm, conserve resources, and promote long-term ecological balance.

Establishing sustainable operations can include minimizing waste and cutting emissions, but it’s also important to explore various ways to harm or help the environment. Yes, cutting back emissions is sustainable, but how can you find the best eco-friendly car?

These questions should be researched thoroughly in order to maximize our efforts. A combination of business policies and individual habits is what’s necessary for widespread improvements.

Digital education

I’ll discuss education through a few different lenses. Digital education has many advantages over traditional education. Students can stay in the comfort of their home and listen to the lectures, saving their time and energy.

I’m going to leave the talk about student productivity and learning comprehension to psychologists, but digital education is also more sustainable. Obviously, students won’t have to travel as much to go to their classes or their dorm.

Students can now enroll in dozens of online tutoring jobs and colleges. And platforms like the FindTutors website make it easier for aspiring educators to connect with students and find remote teaching opportunities.

However, teaching about sustainability is another way in which digital education can help with sustainability. From elementary school up to college, students will be able to learn more about ecology and best practices.

While there isn’t a specific subject in public schools that talks about sustainability, there are dozens of courses and online classes that individuals can explore.

Workflow automation

Workflow automation supports sustainability by eliminating unnecessary manual tasks and replacing them with efficient alternatives. These alternatives are often digital, depending on the nature of the business.

Tasks like scheduling, document management, and communication can be handled automatically through project management software. For businesses that operate completely digitally, this can streamline processes and increase efficiency significantly.

Workflow automation reduces the need for paper, physical storage, and excessive energy use. Something as simple as using an accessible tool like SmallPDF to unprotect a PDF file and edit it online, instead of printing it out, is an example of how digital tools can streamline work and reduce waste.

You can’t edit a printed piece of paper while maintaining elegance. There’s also software for transportation and similar companies that directly helps the business become more sustainable.

This software includes tracking CO2 emissions in real time and provides companies with alternative paths towards their destination.

Link between (digital) education and sustainability

Digital education is inherently sustainable. By migrating learning into virtual space, schools can remove the need for printed textbooks, commuting for teachers and students, and physical classrooms. All of these contribute to carbon emissions and resource consumption.

Countries and institutions that want to work on sustainability should seriously consider, at least partial, digital education. However, digital education can be costly, it can mean that teachers and students must purchase new devices, and have stable internet connection.

The school can cover this, but it’s a small tradeoff. Traditional and digital education can and should also teach sustainability. It is important to build healthy habits and an environmentally conscious mindset from an early age.

How workflow automation impacts sustainability

Automation helps humans reduce unnecessary or tedious tasks. So, instead of employees doing a repetitive task for hours, a tool or a system can do it for them. In short, automation conserves energy.

Sustainability, at its core, is energy conservation. While automation can be great for IT companies and similar businesses, most of its benefits related to sustainability can be reaped by businesses in other industries, like manufacturing, cars, and construction.

Benefits of digital education and workflow automation

We’ve already covered numerous benefits throughout the article, but let’s do a short breakdown again. From reduced transportation and automation, businesses and institutions will emit less carbon.

Then, like with any digital and remote practice, there’s going to be a lot less paper waste. Daily assignments that would require 30 papers per class will now require 0, which is already a huge improvement. This can snowball, and the numbers could be in thousands, depending on the number of students going to a certain school.

There are also numerous benefits that are more general rather than sustainable. For example, there’s going to be a broader access to education, if there would be more courses that support online learning and exams.

There will be many cost savings for businesses, individuals, and schools, from transportation to paper spending. This budget can then be used for something else, whether that’s implementing more sustainable practices, or improving other aspects of education.

Other ways to support sustainability

Besides digital education and automation, which were previously mentioned, there are numerous ways in which businesses and institutions can support sustainability even more. Some of these practices can even be implemented immediately.

Remote-friendly options for businesses

Just like digital education can be quite helpful and sustainable, working remotely for business brings similar benefits. While we can discuss whether students are more effective in the classroom or at home, it’s certain that remote work simply works a lot better for certain individuals.

It’s not a one-size-fits-all option, but it’s always best to have a remote option for individuals who find themselves more productive at home. However, this is also another way of encouraging sustainable practices.

Remote workers don’t have to commute, directly leading to lower carbon emissions and less waste.

Reduce, reuse, and recycle physical materials

Even in a digital-first environment, physical materials still play a role. Prioritize reducing usage where possible, reusing supplies, and setting up clear recycling systems for everything from packaging to electronics.

Use cloud software that relies on renewable energy

Institutions and businesses alike should carefully pick the cloud plan they want to subscribe to. There are numerous options on the market currently, with some offering a lot more features and benefits than others.

However, you should focus on sustainability and explore which cloud solutions use renewable sources for their data centres and locations. Depending on their size, cloud businesses could consume a lot of power.

It’s best to find cloud plans that are sustainable, yet they offer enough benefits to be worthwhile.

Collaborate with other eco-friendly businesses

In addition to cloud providers, companies should explore other sustainable businesses in their environment and partner exclusively with them. For example, if your team grabs a coffee every morning, find a small coffee shop that uses recyclable cups.

If you have to purchase tons of paper for the office, explore which suppliers offer recycled paper. There are dozens of different examples that I can think of, but it all boils down to replacing current partners and providers with the ones that are known for their sustainability.

Sustainable businesses have a competitive edge in 2025

Some people take sustainability and ecology more seriously than others. Many businesses can’t even afford to take certain measures that could bring down the waste they create or the amount of CO2 they release.

Implementing sustainable practices often results in higher productivity and better processes. But, besides the practical reasons, there are many moral and spiritual reasons. The fact that someone is cutting back their profits a bit for the benefit of the environment is noble.

Once customers notice this, they may become customers for environmentally aware businesses. Businesses shouldn’t become sustainable just for the profits; instead, they should do that because it makes a positive impact on the world. However, it’s certain that becoming sustainable can give businesses a competitive edge.
